The Taoiseach says Sinn Féin need to do more to uphold the law, than just call on people to come forward with information.

Enda Kenny's made his first comments on the crisis in the north, after a briefing with the Garda Commissioner on the IRA and other security issues.

Joan Burton has also called on Sinn Féin to do more - a day after the party said it shouldn't be made to answer for every crime in the North.

The comments are likely to lead the crisis in the North to something of an impasse, as Sinn Féin's deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald yesterday claimed it was unfair and unreasonable to expect Sinn Fein to answer for every crime and wrongdoing in Northern Ireland when the same was not expected of other parties.

This afternoon Gerry Adams has said the PSNI should "be allowed to pursue their investigations without political interference".

"The IRA is gone away and Mr Kenny knows that full well. The Taoiseach needs to reflect on his responsibilities to the peace and political processes and should refrain from such offensive and vindictive interventions."
