EU justice ministers have forced through a plan to have 120,000 refugees relocated among member states.
The plan was adopted after 24 of the 28 ministers signed up - forcing it through with a so-called 'qualified majority'.
Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and the Czech Republic voted against the plan.
Ireland did not have a vote, as it has an automatic opt-out on justice matters.
The Dáil will now be asked to sign off on Ireland's participation, which will involve around 1,800 refugees - though the government has committed to taking over twice that number.
