A newspaper's been asked to disclose its source by a Fine Gael investigator hired to examine how the story about Maria Bailey's compensation claim became public.

The Dún Laoghaire TD, who fell off a swing at the Dean Hotel in 2015, has since dropped her compensation claim against the hotel

Deputy Bailey claimed the story had been "pre-planned to cause maximum damage" in a interview radio.

Irish Independent Political Editor ,Kevin Doyle, says the investigator's demand has come as quite a surprise.

He says it's an unusual request because journalists don't give away their sources.

However, The Irish Independent says Senior Counsel, David Bailey, has asked the paper to do exactly that.

David Bailey was appointed to investigate all internal Fine Gael issues around the case and report back to Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar.

The investigation will also ask how and why Maria Bailey gave a know notorious interview to a national radio show without speaking to either the party or the Taoiseach about it beforehand.

The probe was expected to be complete within two weeks but it's now believed it may take another two to finalise the full investigation.
