A new group's been formed to campaign for a No vote in the referendum on same-sex marriage.

'First Families First' says a Yes vote would pose a threat to traditional family relationships - although it says its members disagree on the main issue of same-sex marriage.

It's instead tabled its own proposed amendment to the constitution, guaranteeing that the State would "respect the right of the child who is separated from one or both of its biological parents to maintain personal relations and direct contact with both parents".

However its own founders appear to be divided on whether they would support the referendum on same-sex marriage if their own separate clause were also included in the constitution.

Campaigners for a Yes vote insist the arguments raised by the new group aren't related to the referendum - and are dealt with by the separate Children & Family Relationships Act.
