A German court has convicted a 94-year-old former Auschwitz guard of being an accessory to the murder of at least 300,000 Jews.

Oskar Groening was sentenced to four years in prison.

Mr Groening did not kill anyone himself at the concentration camp, but worked as a bookkeeper, sorting through bank notes taken from Jews entering the concentration camp.

Prosecutors have argued this makes him culpable of supporting a regime responsible for mass murder.

Today’s verdict is a significant ruling in the legacy of the Holocaust.

Until recently the German Justice System did not acknowledge the culpability of those who did not directly kill Jews themselves but were part of the Nazi regime.

The trial heard from several survivors of the death camp, one survivor, Irene Weiss, has said if Mr Groening was present for even one killing, then he is guilty of committing a crime.
