France will take 24,000 refugees

France has pledged to take 24 thousand refugees over the next two years and is calling for all EU states to play their part.

French President Francois Hollande also announced that surveillance flights would begin over IS-controlled sites in Syria tomorrow.

Meanwhile Austria has announced that it's to phase out emergency measures which allowed migrants move from Hungary to Western Europe in recent days.

The Irish Refugee Council says housing people in disused army barracks is NOT a viable long term solution to the current refugee crisis.

The Government is considering using barracks in Kildare - Mullingar - Clonmel and Arbour Hill - to house refugees coming here.

Officials from the Office of Public Works are to examine vacant State facilities to access their suitability and will then advise Government on what can be used.

It comes as the Tanaiste says a figure of five thousand refugees for Ireland is 'in the mix'.
