Government told: Abandon water charges or call election

The government's facing more demands to call an early election, after yesterday's protests over Irish Water.

Sinn Fein says the government has now lost its mandate, and must either abolish water charges or resign entirely.

Mary Lou McDonald says the government cannot continue to insist it has the public on its side, after tens of thousands of people attended yesterday's march in central Dublin.

But the Public Expenditure minister says the numbers signing up to Irish Water prove that the government has the backing of most people in Ireland.

Brendan Howlin says 90,000 people have registered with Irish Water since the new charges were revealed - with 935,000 people now signing up.

Meanwhile the Dáil is continuing its debates on the Water Services Bill, with opposition TDs proposing amendments to the bill.

The government has blocked an amendment which would have forced it to honour the outcome of the public plebiscite.

Opposition TDs say as it's currently worded, the outcome of the public vote does not have to be honoured.
