Some healthcare workers are going to be redeployed to private nursing homes.

The move is being made in order to help tackle the spread of covid-19.

The nursing home sector has been badly hit by the coronavirus with 151 clusters now present in facilities.

To date, 406 people have died as a result of coronavirus, with nursing homes accounting for almost half of those reported.

The redeployment of healthcare workers to the sector will be done on a voluntary basis.

Mervin Taylor from Sage Advocacy says extra staff and better testing are badly needed.

"There are people out there who are really doing there very best. They need more nursing staff, they need medical support and rapid testing"

Mr. Taylor says the issue of testing is a huge problem "both in the public and private system of nursing homes, with staff being out and not knowing whether they have to isolate".

"They're not sure whether they have it or not".
