Around 50 houses have had to be evacuated because of flooding, with more at risk today according to the government task force.

Water levels on the lower River Shannon are expected to peak later while the ESB has increased the flow from Parteen Weir to over 26 million litres a minute.

This is likely to lead to further floods.

Over 700 members of the Defence Forces were deployed this week, with emergency services remaining on stand-by in case of further flooding.

John Barry is Chairman of the government task force, and says many roads have been damaged in the floods.

Already, Fourteen houses in Corbally in Limerick City were flooded last night after the Mulkeir River burst its banks and water was released from a nearby canal.

However angry residents in Corbally claimed they got no warning their homes were under threat.

Anthony O'Donnell's home in Richmond Park was destroyed and his pet dog "princess" drowned as the flood came through his sitting room.
