People in Jamaica are being told to prepare for the island's strongest storm on record.

Hurricane Melissa has been classified as Category 5 - the highest possible level.

It's due to bring winds of 135 miles per hour and there's a warning 4-metre high waves could batter the coast.

The government there has warned it's done all it can to prepare for potentially catastrophic damage.

An estimated 240,000 people are without power in Jamaica, with Hurricane Melissa hours away from its expected landfall.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is advising a 'high degree of caution' for Irish citizens staying on the island, saying people should seek appropriate shelter and follow the advice of Jamaican authorities.

The Jamaican government has closed its international airports until further notice. Potential damage to property and infrastructure may cause additional flight disruption after the hurricane has past.

A number of storm shelters have been opened, especially in low lying areas where residents have been advised to seek higher ground.
