Inquiry told: Media acted as cheerleaders for property boom

The banking inquiry's heard that journalists acted as 'cheerleaders' for the property boom, and helped to drive the economy into the crash.

Witnesses have also said that the media has not done enough to question the government's response to the financial collapse.

They also say commercial interests of media outlets have influenced many of the matters covered by their reporters.

The commentary comes as the inquiry examines the overall role of the media, journalists and commentators in helping to form public opinion before and after the crash.

Dr Julian Mercille of UCD said journalists did not need to be directly told not to publish some material - but would self-censor given their knowledge of the commercial interests of their employers.

DIT lecturer Dr Harry Browne, meanwhile, says he is aware of one case where a journalist was sacked from a newspaper because they had allowed their 'jurisdiction' to include material which belittled a prominent advertiser.
