Ireland Has Its Own 'Fake News' Problem, Seanad Hears

The Seanad has heard claims that Ireland has its own problems with so-called "fake news".

A number of senators have complained that community pages on Facebook can be used to criticise or smear them unfairly.

It's claimed that the pages are originally set up to attract users from local areas, with news about local issues and community events.

However members claim that, over time, the pages can then be used as political platforms with unfair or untrue comments about local politicians.

There's been calls for Facebook to be held more accountable about the content posted on its website by users.
