Garth Brooks, Brian O'Driscoll and Love/Hate caused the biggest spikes in traffic on Twitter in Ireland this year.

A gruesome episode of the Irish drama in October drew the most tweets of 2014, followed by the All Ireland Football semi-final between Kerry and Mayo in August.

Brian O'Driscoll  drew 39,000 retweets for a picture he tweeted after his final game - it was the number 13 jersey hanging up with his boots in the dressing room after the Match against France.

Worldwide, the World Cup was the most tweeted-about event of the year - with 670 million posts worldwide.

The social network has issued a health warning of sorts about taking whats trending to mean whats popular

Twitter says Trends show the hottest emerging topics as they break, making the Twitter the place to keep up-to-date with what's going on in your world.

These lists show what trended most frequently in Ireland in 2014, rather than representing the volume of conversation about a topic or the most talked-about topics. (And remember that trends don't give any indication of sentiment - when something trends, that simply means it has captured Ireland's attention, not that it was necessarily a hit).

Lewis Wiltshire from Twitter says the Oscars in February helped to kick off what they've labelled "the year of the selfie":
