Irish Border Residents Announce Protest For Day After Brexit

Residents living along the Irish border have announced a series of protests on the day after Brexit.

Border Communities Against Brexit will demonstrate from Dundalk to Derry and are calling on political parties, unions and citizens to join them on March 30th.

The group has also launched a declaration which its urging people to sign to send a message to Westminster and Brussels about how their lives will be effected in the event of a hard Brexit.

The Declaration calls for:

  • No Hardening of the border by Implementing the "Backstop",
  • The Preservation of the Good Friday Agreement.
  • Continue EU representation to ensure protection & standards for Citizens rights, employment, environmental & social rights.
  • Continued access to EU funding programmes including PEACE, CAP, Erasmus+ and Interreg.

Group spokesperson Damian McGenity, who lives on the border in Armagh, says Britain crashing out of Europe would have an huge impact on his kids:

'We live a mile and a half from the border, one set of their grandparents lives on the southern side. They go to Dundalk on a Friday evening to go football training, they go swimming. And even for their job prospects, I would like some of them to go to college in Dublin or inLimerick, how is that going to happen with a hard Brexit?'
