The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that an Irish citizen has been arrested in Iraq.

It is reported the man was detained along with two British nationals in the city of Erbil.

It is understood the man had served with the British army and is from County Laois.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it stands ready to provide consular assistance and that Minister Charlie Flanagan is being kept fully informed.
