Irish Water to appear before Environment committee today

The chief executive of Irish Water will today explain the agency's 50 million euro bill for consultants last year.

John Tierney will appear before the Oireachtas Environment committee to discuss spending at the company so far.

It's the first of two hearings Mr Tierney will face from two different committees in two days.

Tomorrow the Public Accounts Committee will try to figure out how Irish Water can be properly scrutinised in the future - but today John Tierney will be asked to explain what he's spent so far.

The Environment committee will ask exactly how the company ran up costs of 100 million euro last year - over half of which went on consultants.

The biggest question is why so much outside expertise was considered necessary - especially when Irish Water was set up as a subsidiary of Bord Gais, specifically to benefit from its knowledge in setting up a billing system.

Irish Water says some of its spending is commercial sensitive and can't be discussed - but any refusals today will only meet with further interrogation tomorrow.
