A member of the Irish Coast Guard has died, after being thrown overboard during a rescue mission off the Co. Clare coast.

Shortly after 1pm today, a Coastguard rib involved in a search overturned, and three members of the coastguard entered the water.

They had been searching for David McMahon, from Lissycasey, who was reported missing last Friday.

Two Coast Guard personnel were rescued from the water and rushed to hospital.

One of them - a female crew member - was later pronounced dead by medical staff.

The Coast Guard has now rescued the third member of the team, who was trapped in a cave.

He had been inaccessible to the coastguard helicopter and boats, but he's now been removed from the scene and is said to be in good condition

The Doolin unit of the Coast Guard, Kilrush RNLI lifeboat and Kilkee Fire and Rescue Service were all involved in the search operation, assisted by the Coastguard helicopter.
