A man has been charged with the murder of boxer Kevin Sheehy in Limerick on Monday.

The 20-year-old Olympic hopeful died after he was hit by an SUV on Hyde Road in Limerick city at 4:40am.

Gardaí said the driver of the car failed to remain at the scene.

A postmortem has been carried out; however, the results have not been released for operational reasons.

Two men were arrested yesterday evening and questioned on suspicion of murder.

A 29-year-old man was charged yesterday and is due to appear before Limerick District Court this morning

Meanwhile, an 18-year-old man has been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the DPP.

A second man, who was with Mr Sheehy at the time, received minor injuries. He was treated at University Hospital Limerick and has since been discharged.
