A man has been hospitalised after using a knife on himself during a stand-off with Gardai in Dublin.

He had just crashed his own car into another on Cookstown Way, Tallaght.

The driver of that car, a woman in her 30s, escaped uninjured.

Aftermath

Following the crash the man tried to hijack a different vehicle at Watergate Estate.

Local detectives and the armed support unit were alerted to the incidents, and later found a man armed with a knife nearby.

As Gardai tried to approach him, he inflicted a number of knife wounds on himself.

Armed support managed to apprehend him safely using non-lethal force.

He was given first aid, and rushed to Tallaght Hospital where he is recuperating from his injuries, which are not life-threatening.

The Garda investigation is ongoing.
