More than 11,000 people have applied to the Gardaí in its latest recruitment drive with 77% saying they're white-Irish.

The force has released figures on who applied to join.

Of these 11,000 who applied - just 800 will be recruited for training in 2022.

The numbers putting their names forward is nearly double the total in the last call in 2019.

Around 40% of those who applied are women.

Around 10% didn't declare their ethnicity, but of those who did around 23% chose an option other than white Irish.

Just over 460 applied through the Irish language stream.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said the increase of applications from ethnic backgrounds is welcome, and they know they have a lot of work to do to be more representative of the public.
