New Public Transport Fares Will Make Commute Cheaper For Some And More Expensive For Others

New public transport fares will be introduced later this year which will benefit some commuters into Dublin but hit the pockets of others.

The Dublin Commuter or short hop Zone is being extended 50km to include towns like Drogheda, Navan, Newbridge and Greystones meaning fare decreases of between 20% and 50%.

However, bus fares are set to go up in some places like from Cavan to Dublin which is increasing 21%.

A new monthly and annual Leap card will also be available which will be 38% cheaper for those travelling within Dublin city.

Anne Graham from the National Transport Authority says they’re trying to make it fairer:

"What we wanted to do was introduce a much more equitable distance based fare.

"Because we found that there wasn't really any equivalent or fare based on where you were travelling from different parts of Ireland.

"So what we're introducing is a distance based fare, which will be equitable and will be the same no matter what route you are taking."
