The health minister Leo Varadkar will announce a major package of reforms on patient safety today.

It'll include plans for a new advocacy service, which would provide support and advice to users of the health service.

These measures were developed in response to high profile cases in recent years, including the death of Savita Halappanavar and last year's report on baby deaths at Portlaoise hospital.

The proposed National Patient Advocacy Service - which will be independent of the HSE - will provide advice and support to patients, as well as recording and analysing complaints.

An advisory council comprising healthcare and patient representatives - tasked with giving advice on patient safety and publishing reports - also forms part of today's package.

A yearly patient experience survey is being introduced under the reforms, which will be used to guide policy and services.

Health Minister Leo Varadkar will announce the full details of the package at a conference today.
