Petrol Prices Reached A Record Breaking €2 Per Litre Yesterday

The price of a litre of petrol in Ireland has gone above €2 for the first time.

Maxol's M3 Mulhuddart service station in Dublin was charging 200 cents per litre for premium petrol at one point yesterday.

AA Ireland had recently been predicting the price would exceed the €2 barrier.

Kevin McPartland, the chief executive of Fuels for Ireland, says the Ukraine-Russia conflict is a big factor in prices.

"Oil prices are always very heavily dependent on the global geo-political situation."

But he said with Russia facing sanctions it puts "massive pressure" on the price of fuel globally.

He expects prices to stay high for the "foreseeable future" but is calling on the Government to take action.

"More than a euro is going to the Government in different taxes."

"They need to be looking at how oil is taxed so that the consumer isn't being faced with an unbearable burden".
