Plan To Link Towns And Jobs With 'Cycle Corridors'

A new network of 85 cycling corridors around the country is launching today.

Ireland's first National Cycle Network Plan will link cities and towns of over 5,000 people, and total 3,500 kilometres in length.

The aim is that 80% of households and nearly 90% of jobs will be located within 5 km of the network.

Its launch begins today with the official opening of Phase 1 of the Grand Canal Greenway in Sallins, County Kildare.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan said, "this national cycling network will act as a core spine, connecting towns, cities and destinations across the country with safe, segregated cycling infrastructure wherever feasible.

"I think this will really help to encourage cycling confidence and in turn the number of trips taken by both walking and cycling amongst locals, leisure users, and tourists alike.”
