President leads tributes after "most dreadful tragedy" kills 10 in Dublin

10 people - including two babies - have died following a fire in Carrickmines in South Dublin.

The blaze broke out at a halting site on the Glenamuck road in the early hours of this morning.

It's the worst loss of life by fire in Ireland since the 1981 Stardust Disaster.

The 10 victims of this tragedy are thought to be from 2 different families.

Two babies, aged five and six months old, are the youngest among the dead; one of the infants died this afternoon in hospital.

A number of other children also died in the fire.

Emergency services arrived at the scene on Glenamuck road after 4:30 this morning, following an emergency call from a member of the public.

Gerry Stanley from from the Dublin Fire Brigade explained the scene when they arrived:

Initial investigations indicate that two housing units in the halting site were extensively damaged in the blaze.

Three people, including a child, are still being treated in hospital this evening.

They were taken to Tallaght and St Vincent's Hospitals in Dublin, where they're being treated for smoke inhalation.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau are still examining the scene at Glenamuck Road this evening, and the assistant state pathologist also carried out an examination

The road remains sealed off by a patrolled Garda cordon.

In a statement - the Southside Traveller Action Group has extended its deepest sympathies to the relatives of those killed.

The group is currently supporting the families at the scene, who are in a state of shock at the devastating loss of lives.

Accommodation for those left homeless by the fire is being arranged by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

The President Michael D Higgins has lead tributes to the ten people who lost their lives following the Carrickmines fire tragedy.

President Higgins said it was a "most dreadful tragedy",while Taoiseach Enda Kenny has joined in expressing his sympathies on behalf of the Irish people.

The Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin said the news was "heartbreaking for all in the Traveller and wider local community".

He has asked that all those who have died - and those injured, and their families - be remembered at Masses over the weekend.

Tánaiste Joan Burton said she was "deeply saddened" by the disaster:
