PSNI says RUC had no advance warning of Shankill bombing

The PSNI's chief constable has dismissed claims that its predecessor, the RUC, had advanced warning of the Shankill bombing.

It follows an Irish News report that the IRA leader who planned the 1993 Shankill bomb was working as a police informer.

Nine Protestant civilians were killed in the attack in Belfast, as well as one of the bombers.

Speaking at an event in Belfast last night, George Hamilton said he was 100 per cent convinced the RUC had no knowledge of the bombing that could have prevented it.

According to The Irish Times Mr Hamilton also said criminal proceedings are increasingly unlikely in the vast majority of legacy cases.
