The Health Minister will announce later today public funding for IVF from September.

This will be the first time that such treatment would be fully publicly funded.

Eligible couples will be fully funded for one round of IVF, subject to qualification criteria.

Access criteria include couples having a known clinical cause of infertility, maximum age limits, Body Mass Index (BMI) requirements and the number of children the couple already have.

One IVF cycle will be provided for couples who've had no more than one privately-funded round.

Up to three cycles of IUI, Intrauterine Insemination Treatment, may be covered.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly estimates available funding will cover treatment for about 3,000 couples.

"The referral pathway will be from the GP to one of the six regional fertility hubs.

"If the treating clinician, believes that the couple is eligible, then they'll refer them on for IVF".

The HSE is finalising the plans with services to be provided through private clinics.

€10 million in funding has been provided for this year with the Department of Health planning to expand the services offered and the number of people who can avail of them over time.
