The Transport Minister has welcomed news that strike action at Irish Rail has been called off.

A revised set of proposals was hammered out at all-party talks, which will now go to a ballot of union members.

Minister Paschal Donoghue says all parties are aware of Irish Rail's 'financial predicament', and this agreement is 'essential' to addressing its challenges.

Irish Rail spokesman Barry Kenny says the controversial pay cuts are still on the cards, but have been deferred for three weeks to allow workers to have their say in the ballot.

He's also outlined some of the other measures in the plan:

Marathon talks at the Labour Relations Commission in Dublin led to a late night breakthrough.

Jennifer Ryan has the details;

News that the strikes have been averted broke in the early hours of this morning.

All sides had spent another marathon session at the LRC, trying to hammer out a solution to the row that had already disrupted tens of thousands of passengers and cost the company 1.5 million euro last month.

Irish Rail now says the strike action has been averted, and parties have agreed to endorse a revised set of proposals which address 'all key issues'.

They will be put to a ballot of union members, with Irish Rail management agreeing to pause pay reduction for three weeks to facilitate a vote.

It means the work stoppages planned for next Sunday - the day of the all Ireland hurling final - and the day after, as well as a third one on the 21st of this month won't go ahead.

Tickets for those dates are due to go on sale at 11:00.
