Rental Market Is In A 'Terrible State' - Taoiseach

The Taoiseach admits the rental market is in a 'terrible state' due to an 'exodus of small landlords'.

But Leo Varadkar says the government wasn't aware of the 'exact number' of termination notices issued prior to its decision to end the evictions ban.

Figures published by the Residential Tenancies Board show over 4,300 notices to quit were issued in the last three months of 2022.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says we shouldn't lose sight of the fact new tenancies are being created.

"It's absolutely the case that we're in the middle of a very deep housing crisis.

"I don't think anyone is in denial about that or doesn't get that.

"There are areas where we are making a lot of progress, you know, more new homes built last year than any year in 10.

"One of the areas that is in a terrible state is the rental market.

"But what we shouldn't lose sight of...last year, 50,000 new tendencies were."
