A judge will today decide whether the trial of the former Anglo Irish Bank chairman later this year will be postponed.

Last Friday lawyers for Sean Fitzpatrick asked that his upcoming October trial be postponed, because of the publicity surrounding the trial of three ex-Anglo officials in recent weeks.

The Defence Counsel told Dublin Circuit Criminal Court he was concerned about the date, because of its proximity to the trial of the former officials.

They were sentenced last week for trying to defraud Revenue - making them the first bankers to be imprisoned in Ireland since the onset of the financial crisis.

But the prosecution submitted that the publicity did not render Mr FitzPatrick's upcoming trial "incapable of going on."

Judge Martin Nolan adjourned the matter until today, when he will decide on whether to postpone Mr FitzPatrick's trial.
