Ryanair says it has e-mailed all customers who've had their flights cancelled to clarify their right to a refund, re-routing on an alternative flight and how to claim expenses.

It's after both the Irish and British aviation regulators requested that the airline provide further details to affected passengers or face legal action.

It says where an outbound flight is cancelled, a refund will also be offered for the return flight.

In the case of re-routing, Ryanair's outlined a four step process that it will undertake to ensure people reach their destination.

The airline also said it will reimburse any reasonable out of pocket expenses, as long as it receives an EU 261 expense claim form.

The Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) says it's satisfied with Ryanair's response and will continue to monitor the situation.

Earlier the Taoiseach said people's rights must be protected by over the flight cancellations.

Speaking in the Estonian capital Tallinn, Mr Varadkar says: "I think it's as simple as this: people's and passengers rights need to be protected.

"So if anyone has had a flight cancelled, any airline - in this case Ryanair - needs to provide them with an alternative way of getting to where they need to go or refunding them in full.

"I'd absolutely expect the airlines to do that - and if they don't do that, I'd expect the Commission for Aviation Regulation to make sure they do".
