The search for a boy in North Dublin is continuing this afternoon.

Gardaí and forensic experts are examining an area of open land near Donabate for the second day.

Despite the poor weather, gardaí began arriving at the sealed off scene on the Portrane Road from before nine o'clock this morning.

They say its keeping an open mind into this investigation, which began when Tusla notified the force of its concerns for the child on Friday.

The child and family agency has confirmed it previously engaged with the boy and his family, but this ended five years ago.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is urging people not to jump to conclusions:

"These are complex situations, sometimes there tends to be a very premature reaction - to blame Tusla for everything. I'm not clear thats the correct pathway initially."

The child involved hasn't been seen in at least three years, and is presumed dead.

Last night, a crowd of around 100 people gathered in Donabate to light candles and show support for the boy and one another.

Local Labour Councillor Corina Johnston, says the community is in shock:

"The sense last night at the vigil, it was an absolutely fantastic coming together of people who are traumatised and in shock. They are rocked by this tragedy."

Gardaí say there are no updates to the investigation so far.

The search is likely to last a number of days, and no arrests have been made.
