Seven people were hospitalised after a violent altercation in a Galway cemetery yesterday.

About 30 officers - including armed gardaí - responded to the incident in Tuam at around 4pm, after a brawl broke out.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested at the scene, after he allegedly tried to flee in possession of a knife.

Five men and two women were brought to University Hospital Galway, with non-life-threatening injuries.

Local councillor Joe Sheridan says the fight broke out after two separate funerals crossed paths.

He said: "It's an unsavoury element to what was a sad day for two families burying their dead.

"This could escalate into something that could lead to somebody else's funeral... it will take an approach by the State to cease this kind of nonsensical violence."
