Sinn Fein TD Brian Stanley does not believe he owes an apology over a remark he made about Tanaiste Leo Varadkar sexuality in 2017.

Three years ago, the Laois-Offaly Deputy said Leo Varadkar can do what he wants in bed "but don't look 4 a pay rise in the morning".

The tweet has since been deleted.

Deputy Stanley says his record on gay rights speaks for itself:

"I do not have to apologise to anybody. I have worked, and as I said before, I was out campaigning on those issues when it wasn't actually as popular as it is now".

"What I mean by that tweet was we were trying to push legislation and measures regarding workers rights and minimum wage and a living wage. The point I was making was - it's great that we have achieved the rights for gay people and for women, and yippee to that".

Just yesterday, the Public Accounts Committee chairman's apologised over comparing the Narrow Water bombing by the Provisional IRA in 1979 to a War of Independence ambush.
