The Taoiseach says the country’s next economic goal is to create enough jobs to allow emigrants to come back to Ireland.

In his televised address to mark the end of the bailout, Enda Kenny said the government wanted to increase employment to over two million by 2020.

He said a new economic strategy - which will also see Ireland eliminate government borrowing forever - will be published this week.

Enda Kenny’s live TV speech echoed the contents of his first - that tough budgets would be necessary to overcome the crippling bank debts and start creating jobs.

Last night he said Ireland was most of the way there - but that the government would not change tack now that it seems to be bringing results.

He thanked the Irish public for the part they had played in the recovery so far - and said more of the same would help to create more work here at home.

The Taoiseach pledged that the medium-term economic plan being published this week would help to end ‘boom and bust’ economics forever.

Three opposition leaders will get their chance to respond on TV this evening.
