Government rules ensuring the emergency COVID payment isn't given to people who travel abroad have been described as discriminatory.

So far 104 people have had their pandemic unemployment payment stopped because of checks at airports.

The 350 euro a week payment won't be made to people who travel abroad even to green list countries and isn't paid during the two weeks of self-isolating when someone returns from abroad.

RISE TD Paul Murphy believes it's a rule unfairly targeting those who've lost their jobs:

"Instead of having people in the airport checking people's PPS numbers, checking if people have a job when they're on the way out. Instead, those resources should be spent on testing people when they're coming in to see if they have coronavirus."

"So all of this just smacks of quite a blatant discrimination".

Meanwhile, the number of people claiming the Pandemic Unemployment Payment has more than halved since the peak on May 5th.

286,900 people will be paid tomorrow, that's down 26,900 on last week.

Almost 20,000 people closed their claims in the last seven days, with 8,800 claimants being paid for the last time tomorrow.
