Trump wants 'extreme vetting' of immigrants

Donald Trump says immigrants will be subject to 'extreme vetting' before gaining access to the United States if he's elected President.

In a speech in Ohio he says he will block people who do not embrace American values.

The Republican candidate has been setting out his plans to deal with terrorism.

His campaign aides say a new ideological test for admission to the US would vet applicants for their stance on issues such as religious freedom, gender equality and gay rights. 

They claim the government will use questionnaires, social media, interviews with friends and family or other means to check if applicants support US values.

The US will also stop issuing visas in any case where it cannot perform adequate screenings, the campaign said.

The campaign did not clarify how US officials would verify responses to the questionnaires or how much manpower would be needed to complete such vetting. 

Donald Trump says the idea will mean temporarily stopping people migrating from dangerous parts of the world.


Last week Mr Trump suggested President Obama founded Islamic State.
