Two Irish men are due to appear in court in Melbourne this weekend charged with attempted murder.

It's after a former police detective was shot in the face last Thursday.

30 year old Mark Dixon and 26 year old Jack Harvey were arrested near Byron Bay on Wednesday after a two day manhunt and an appeal on Crimestoppers.

53 year old ex police detective Sid Morgan was found injured on the street near his house in Point Cook in Melbourne the previous Thursday.

He had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and is still in a critical condition in hospital.

Local reports say that Morgan may have been shot during a dispute involving tradesmen chasing an unpaid debt and may not have been the intended target.

The Irish men have appeared at Byron Bay Local Court charged with attempted murder.

They're to be extradited to Melbourne to appear in court there on Saturday.

Mr Morgan worked as a real estate agent after leaving the police force.

Mr Morgan who is now a real estate agent was acquitted of the murder in 1997 of his brother-in-law Mansour Suha, who had been charged with molesting three young girls.

The court heard Mr Morgan killed Mr Suha because he believed the girls were in danger.
