A new survey has shown that 70% of female students and 40% of males experience sexual harassment by the time they finish college.
The survey of 3,500 students was conducted by NUI Galway. It also looked at the relationship between alcohol consumption and consent, finding a belief among students that consent can still be granted after drinking the equivalent of 14 pints or three bottles of wine.
Charlotte McIvor, who was involved in conducting the study at NUIG, says she wasn't surprised by the results and that there is "quite a permissive attitude among university students" in relation to consent and the level of alcohol consumed.
As well as continuing to roll out consent workshops at NUI Galway, Charlotte says they have also started a new education and awareness campaign which involves initiating a poster campaign on campus and the creation of a series of interactive short films on the subject.
Cliona Sadlier, Executive Director of the Rape Crisis Network Ireland, thinks education around appropriate behaviour needs to start at primary level.
"We have the evidence now, we know that this has an impact not only on education and mental health but also on how people progress."
"We're in a phase where we're normalising this. We're of a culture which has some very worrying norms in it that we need to change."
