According figures released by Garda National Traffic Bureau there has been a shift “back to the bad old days” when it comes to drink driving and speeding. Since the beginning of the year, 5,000 people have been arrested for drink driving, including 719 in July. Over the bank holiday weekend of the 7000 people tested 165 people were arrested for drink driving.

But what the figures have also shown is there is a new trend in the rise of drink driving incidents involving young people. In Kerry alone one third, or 51, of those found to be driving while intoxicated in the six months up to the end of June were between the ages of 21 and 30

Dr John Madden Retired Coroner for North East Donegal, Fianna Fail Councillor John Francis Flynn and Chief Supt Aidan Reid of the Garda National Traffic Bureau.
