Mayo legend Padraig Carney sadly passed away in California at the age of 91.

Mayo GAA confirmed last night that Padraig Carney died in California, aged 91. Carney, born in Swinford, was a member of the Mayo All-Ireland winning teams of 1950 and 1951.

He was dubbed 'The Flying Doctor' after being flown home from New York by the Mayo County Board for the 1954 National League semi-final and final. Carney was studying medicine in the USA when he came back to play.

Carney scored a tally of 8-99 in 30 championship appearances before retiring from the game at the age of 26 due to his studies.

He also won National league titles in 1949 and 1954, two Sigerson Cup titles with UCD, a Railway Cup medal, as well as four Connacht titles.

Swinford GAA wrote on Facebook:

Carney's passing leaves Paddy Prendergast as the only player still alive from the last Mayo team to lift the Sam Maguire.
