In 1988, the Open Championship went to a Monday at Lytham after rain delays, when Seve Ballesteros (pictured) finished with a 65 to see off the challenge of Nick Price and win his third claret jug and final major golf title.

We are now faced with a Monday conclusion for the 2015 renewal at St Andrews for two reasons.  The first was the torrential rain which flooded the low lying parts of the course on Friday morning; causing a delay of over 3 hours. The second is the high winds, gusting up to 40 miles per hour this morning, which resulted in balls moving on the greens and the players being called off course after only 32 minutes.

It means 39 players must complete their second rounds, and the Royal and Ancient, the organisers of the tournament, won't now resume play until there is a material reduction in wind speed. It means it could be this afternoon before round 3 begins in three balls. We just don't know.

This morning was damaging for those who resumed - Dustin Johnson dropped a shot to slip back to 9 under and in a share of the lead with Danny Willett. Jason Day made 2 bogeys and is now back on 6 under. Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth three putted 14 to remain 5 under par and questioned why he was sent back out on the course.

The last 3 Opens at St Andrews had a clear path - Louis Oosthuizen and Tiger Woods were dominant by the Saturday morning - the opposite is the case this time - who knows what is going to happen?

Paul Dunne remains the Irish star. The 22 year old amateur from Greystones has got to 6 under par through 36 holes and is tied ninth. He leads the race for the silver medal and has shown remarkable composure to eclipse Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke and Shane Lowry.
