Mikel Arteta is willing to walk away from Manchester City to become Arsenal's new manager.

The Gunners are on the lookout for a new manager after parting company with Unai Emery in late November.

Arteta was in the dugout with City at the Emirates on Sunday as Pep Guardiola's side beat Arsenal 3-0 in the Premier League.

Interim manager Freddie Ljungberg has won just one game in five since being appointed on November 29 and after the defeat to City he called for the club to take swift action in their search for a new manager.

Arsenal have picked up one win in 12 matches, leaving them 10th in the Premier League on 22 points, seven adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.

Pep Guardiola has consistently said says he would not stop Arteta if he decided to leave the Premier League champions.

Arteta made 149 appearances for Arsenal between 2011 and 2016 and was in line to replace Arsene Wenger in 2018 before the club appointed Emery.

If all goes according to plan, Arteta should be confirmed in time for Saturday’s Premier League fixture away to another one of his former clubs, Everton.

Would Arteta be able to turn things around at Arsenal?

The Spaniard’s appointment would be a bold choice given his lack of managerial experience.

Arteta was in the dugout at the Emirates on Sunday and despite a dismal performance from Arsenal, he has not being deterred by the task in hand.

It wouldn't take him long to identify the problem areas in the team but even if he changes personnel, there has to be a change in attitude.

The squad has some exciting attacking options but Emery seemed unable to settle on his best line up and if the attack doesn't function, Arsenal can't win games because of a lack of quality at the back.

Arteta would need assurances from the club's hierarchy that he can bring in some players in January.

The top priority has to be a central defender and the club could also do with offloading some of the current first-team squad.
