Ashleigh Barty to skip US Open over coronavirus concerns

World number one Ashleigh Barty has confirmed that she won't be playing at next month's US Open tennis, due to concerns over travelling during the pandemic.

It'll be the first time since 2010 that the women's top player will not be part of the Slam in New York and the Australian has also withdrawn from the upcoming Western & Southern Open.

“I love both events so it was a difficult decision,” Barty said in a statement. “But there are still significant risks involved due to Covid-19, and I don’t feel comfortable putting my team and I in that position.

“I will make my decision on the French Open and the surrounding WTA European tournaments in the coming weeks."

Simona Halep's participation at the US Open remains in doubt after she committed to taking part in clay-court events in Europe next month.

Fellow world top ten players Elina Svitolina, Bianca Andreescu and Naomi Osaka are also not participating at the Western & Southern Open.

"I respect every player’s decision,” US Open tournament director, Stacey Allaster, said of Barty's absence at Flushing Meadows.

“Ash made her decision on what she thinks is best for her and her team. We wish her well, and I am looking forward to seeing her return to play as she is a fan favorite.”
