Chelsea closing in on Edouard Mendy signing

Chelsea are on the verge of adding to their goalkeeping options with Edouard Mendy having a medical in London this afternoon.

The 28-year-old is set to complete a 25-million Euro move from Rennes and he's already agreed terms on a five-year contract with the Blues.

Should the transfer be completed before Thursday, the Senegalese stopper will be available to play against West Brom in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Chelsea have been searching for a new 'keeper this summer due to the inconsistent form of their current number one, Kepa Arrizabalaga.

"Mendy's having a medical as we speak, so subject to that being OK later on he'll become our player at that point," Lampard said.

"With Mendy coming in its more competition, so every reaction will have to be positive around that from Kepa.

"Mendy as he comes in himself will push to try and play in this team; we know that. We know the standards that are required from a goalkeeper in this team, so we have to push for that."

The Chelsea boss says he's hoping that Kepa will relish a fight for a place in the first team.

"I think competition is a regular thing at a club like Chelsea. The goalkeeper situation isn’t always as clear-cut as that. Kepa himself wants to improve his own performances.

"It’s in everyone’s hands to push and develop to try and get in the team. I am not making any final statements at all in this minute.

"It is the hardest position because of the individual nature of it and mistakes get punished with goals. I understand that and as a manager I have to be sympathetic to that point. I am very aware of that."
