Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder believes there is a lot more to come from David McGoldrick for the Blades after announcing his retirement from international football.

McGoldrick released a statement on Wednesday to confirm he had called time on playing for the Republic of Ireland.

The 32-year-old earned 14 caps for the Boys in Green and recently impressed for Stephen Kenny's side in the Euro 2020 playoff away to Slovakia in October.

Wilder said: "He’s made that decision. An obvious benefit for us is that he’s with us and can concentrate on his club career.

"He’s given so much to this football club and there’s so much more for him to do."

Sheffield United are yet to win in the Premier League this season having picked up just one point from their opening seven games.

Chris Wilder's side have lost five of their six top-flight games by a one-goal margin, which includes their last two games against Liverpool and Manchester City.

"At the moment it’s not going the way that we all want it to," Wilder said ahead of Saturday's trip to Chelsea.

"One thing you can always count on at our football club is we’re 100% committed in trying to get a result."

"The last two games have been difficult in terms of results, but very, very encouraging in terms of performances.

"It’s a great challenge for us on Saturday evening."

Sheffield United came from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw on their last trip to Stamford Bridge in August 2019.
