Derry's Conor Glass will return to Ireland after calling time on his four-year AFL career with Hawthorn.

The Melbourne-based club confirmed on Wednesday that the 22-year-old would be coming home with immediate effect.

The former Derry minor captain signed a contract with Hawthorn in 2015 on an international rookie deal and went on to make 21 appearances in the AFL.

Hawthorn Chief of Football Graham Wright thanked Glass: "Conor has spent four and a half years at Hawthorn and has been totally committed to his AFL career the whole way through.

"While he will be missed around the club, the pull home has always been there for Conor and we fully support his decision.

"We thank both Conor and his family for his service to our club, the will always be a part of the Hawthorn family.

"We wish Conor all the best in his future endeavours."

Glass captained Derry to an Ulster Minor Football title in 2015 and his return will be a massive boost to Derry manager, Rory Gallagher.
