Europe retained the Ryder Cup with a 5 point win over the USA at Gleneagles. Jamie Donaldson secured the winning point with a stunning approach shot on the 15th hole which helped the Welshman beat Keegan Bradley 4&3. That saw the Europeans reach the all important 14.5 points on a day that saw Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer, Sergio Garcia and Donaldson all win their singles matches.

Paul McGinley's men started the day with a four point advantage and in the end won by 16.5 to 11.5 which means they've won eight of the last 10 Ryder Cups.

World number one Rory McILroy picked up the first point of the day to make it 11-6 - he made seven birdies and an eagle in his first 12 holes before going on to beat Rickie Fowler 5 and 4.

Graeme McDowell recovered from a disastrous start to beat Jordan Spieth 2 and 1 in the top match - he was 3 down to the US rookie after 5 holes.

Martin Kaymer moved the hosts even closer with a 4 and 2 win over Bubba Watson and when Justin Rose got a half against Hunter Mahan the European's only needed one more point to reach the magic number of 14.5.

Donaldson delivered it in style, hitting his approach to the 15th to within inches of the hole to beat Keegan Bradley:

That shot prompted a handshake on the fairway between captains Paul McGinley and Tom Watson, the former being instantly hailed by his players and the latter certain to be criticised for a number of debatable decisions this week.

One of those was leaving five-time major winner Phil Mickelson on the sidelines all day Saturday, the first time that had happened to the 44-year-old in 10 Ryder Cup appearances. Mickelson didn't hold back in the post tournament press conference with his criticism of Watson.
