Former world no.1 Caroline Wozniacki retiring after Australian Open

Caroline Wozniacki has announced her retirement from tennis at the age of just 29.

The Dane will bow out at January's Australian Open in Melbourne, the site of her lone career Grand Slam victory in 2018.

Wozniacki reached the summit of the WTA rankings in October of 2010, and won 30 singles titles during her 14-year career.

In a Twitter statement, Wozniacki said she had "accomplished everything I could ever dream of on the court".

While she may have only won that solitary Grand Slam, Wozniacki has been renowned for her consistency. She won at least one tournament per year since 2008 - the joint fifth-highest overall streak.

She's won $35,218,415 in career prize money. Only Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova have won more.

Wozniacki's last tournament win came at the China Open in October of 2018 where she beat Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets.

She currently sits 37th in the WTA rankings but said in her parting statement, "I've always told myself, when the time comes, that there are things away from tennis that I want to do more, then it's time to be done.

"In recent months, I've realized (sic) that there is a lot more in life that I'd like to accomplish off the court".

Wozniacki married former Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks player David Lee in June of 2019 and she said, "Getting married to David was one of those goals and starting a family with him while continuing to travel the world and helping raise awareness about rheumatoid arthritis (project upcoming) are all passions of mine moving forward."

Melbourne will prove to be Wozniacki's swansong, but she insists, "This has nothing to do with my health and this isn't a goodbye.

"I look forward to sharing my exciting journey ahead with all of you!".

She concluded by thanking her fans, friends, sponsors and team while singling out her father Piotr - who has served as her coach since 2004 - for specific thanks.
