Ireland legend Kevin Sheedy appointed manager at Waterford

Kevin Sheedy has been appointed the new manager at Waterford.

The Republic of Ireland legend succeeds former international teammate John Sheridan who left the role earlier this year.

Sheridan quit after just 65 days in the job to take the manager's job at Wigan Athletic.

Sheedy will be assisted at the RSC by his former Everton colleague Mike Newell.

The man who famously scored Ireland's equaliser against England in Cagliari in 1990 spent most of his coaching career at the Everton academy.

In recent years he worked with Newell at Saudi Arabian club, Al-Shabab with their U23 side.

Sheedy seems well prepared for the turnover of managers at Waterford.

In 2018 he told The Irish Daily Star of his time at Al-Shabab, "The club I was coaching, in the space of time I was over there with Mike Newell, they had four different managers in the period.

"So it's very change, change. That's the way they operate over there."

In confirming Sheedy's appointment, Waterford have also promised a number of new signings in the coming days.

They've already seen full-back Tyreke Wilson leave for Bohemians in the close season.

Goalkeeper Tadhg Ryan and forward William Fitzgerald have also seen deals expired and they currently reside on the PFAI's transfer list.

Waterford often threatened to secure European football last season, but consistency was their foe with seven wins offset by eight defeats as they finished fifth.
